Can an HDTV antenna be used on an analog TV?

Postby phil2bfree on Sun Jul 13, 2008 11:02 pm

Hi: I am in the Stone Age when it comes to new TV technology. My zip code is 10003 (NYC). If possible, I would like to connect an HDTV antenna to one analog Sanyo TV and possibly my PC.

My analog TV that does not have cable, so my reception is not very good. Someone told it might help to get an HDTV antenna to improve reception. I would like a 2nd opinion (or more). Is it possible to connect an HDTV antenna to an analog TV?

I was also advised that I could connect my PC to the HDTV antenna by using a PC TV tuner. That way I hope I could get good reception if I watch TV on my PC. I would be grateful for your advice. Thanks a lot !!

First of all, there is no such thing as an HDTV antenna: any antenna that works well for analog reception will also work for digital reception. Secondly, in NYC, you have so much multipath that your only real solution is either cable TV or an outdoor antenna mounted on your roof aimed at the ESB. If you can't get an antenna mounted outdoors, expect that you are going to have lousy reception unless you have a window near the TV set that looks out over the ESB. Indoor antennas are mostly useless in urban areas, since they have no ability to fight multipath, which causes ghosting. In any event, you only have 6 months before you will HAVE to go digital, so go out and buy yourself a good digital converter now, like the Zenith DTT-900 or DTT-901, or the Insignia model from Best Buy, and get with the program now: chances are that having one will improve your tv reception.
