can I have it all

Postby tina on Thu Sep 24, 2009 9:34 pm

I am attempting to pull in HD stations from the Buffalo/Toronto market.

I can tune in ABC, NBC CBS and Fox but just not at the same time. I get most of the CDN stations.

Here is my set up currently using a Philips Mant940 UHF maximum gain 470-862 mhz 18 db
noise 4db with in-line amplifier 12volt

mounted antenna at a height of 25. There is a 3 floor apt building two blocks away slight incline.
I am almost on the crest of the escarpment @

Latitude = 43.1328, Longitude = -79.2060
Lat = 43 degrees, 8.0 minutes North
Long = 79 degrees, 12.4 minutes West

I am hooked to a Zenith DTT901 Converter box (no percentage of signal strength indicator)
1 TV SONY (2003 HD ready?)
There is about 70 ft of coax run between entry into basement from antenna running to tv
I get the same amount and quality of stations at the origin point in basement as I do upstairs.
Of course I got better signal strength placing the antenna on the opposite side of the house furthest away from the TV.
Cat 5 cable in house but I have RG 6 installed but can't distinguish between the various cable runs. Any tips?

I can pull in the NBC and CBS but not the ABC ( the ABC station is 1 degree and two miles difference away from the CBS station.)

Do I need a rotary antenna? An attic antenna would be easier to install or fine tune. Suggestions pls.

thanks for your help. I hope I gave you enough info to assist

You can get everthng that you are looking for, but you won't get it with that Phillips antenna. Since you still have analog signals in Toronto for at least 2 more years, you will want an all-channel antenna lke a Channel Master Crossfire 3671 or a Winegard HD-8200u plus a rotator like a Channel Master 9521a ,and ,a high-input preamplifier like a Winegard HDP-269, which will help youwith weak signals, but won't overload in the face of strong locl stations.

As for your tuner, if your TV set is actually HD-ready, you should find an outboard Digital HD tuner, bot a converter, since the converter willl not let you see Over-the Air digital signals in HD. I have had good luck using the Samsung DTB-H260f tuner, which has excellent reception. If you want to know if your TV will accept HD signals, look on the back for component inputs, red-blue and green RCA connectors, or a DVI or HDMI input.

Thanks for the reply.
Today I was able to get all Buffalo stations although the ABC WKBW was in and out. I can pick up 64,66, 41, 11, 9, 5 (toronto market)
The Toronto stations I have and want are already in HD. So I am ok there. I'd rather just get a HD antenna as eventually that will be the standard. AntennaCraft HBU33 would that be ok? Would I still need a rotor?

My guess is, an indoor antenna does not have the capability to pull in both markets?

My TV is HD ready since I have those inputs already. My antenna in cable was too short to reach the tv so I used the converter box.
besides it has a strength indicator. I understand what you are saying tho' in regard to the digital vs HD.

Thanks for all the advice and recommendations you are awesome

If you only want the Buffalo stations, you only need UHF. I would suggest using an AntennasDirect XG-43 for the Buffalo stations.
