Austin Antenna Help

Postby jammingar on Thu Dec 03, 2009 9:03 am

I am at 30 degrees 24' 30.65" N and 97 degrees 45' 10.98" west in Austin, Texas and currently reside on the first floor of a two story apartment building. Time warner has alinated me to the point where I will no longer put up with their poor service, and Uverse is unavailable to me, so I and looking into "free" tv. I can't have any sort of exterior antenna, and i've been looking at a few different indoor antennas, but I would like any recommendation on which indoor antenna set up would be best. I'm willing to go high end if i need to, as I will probably not have cable for the forseable future. I appreciate everyone's input. I will be useing this antenna on one vizio 32" television, and my apartment backs up to a VERY wooded area and I am in a hilly part of town. Zip is 78759

I cannot ever promise that an indoor antenna will suffice, as there are too many variable to predict success. I would ask your landlord if they are willing to allow you to mount an antenna on the roof. if they will allow it, reception will be easy and very good.

Is there any particular indoor antenna that you have heard good things about? I fully intend to test any antenna I buy to assure decent picture, I guess what I'm looking for is a particular direction I should take. Is there one brand or one type of antenna that is particularly sucessful in general?

the difference between the best and worst iindoor antenna is miniscule: more important is your location, the construction of your building, and the placement of the TV set in the apartment relative to the location of the transmitters.

FWIW I have had some success using a Terk HDTVa, which is an amplified UHF-VHF undoor antenna, It uses a version of the famous SilverSensor UHF antenna for it's UHF reception. You will find that VHF digital reception with an indoor antenna is especially difficult, so you may have trouble with your local FOX affiliate.
