ATSC Antenna Mandatory?

I just baught a new tv with an annolog tuner and a "digital (HD) TV Tuner". It is a GPX under the cabinet TV. I am using rabit ears and the reception is horible. My other tv's with converter boxes and / rabit ears are great.

The manual says this word for word on page 7:
"The unit has a 181 Channel Cable-Ready TV Tuner and Digital (HD) TV Tuner. The Digital TV Tuner will only work with a connected HD TV Antenna."

This site and all others say there is no such thing as a digital tv antenna. Which is it!?!

its just a lousy tuner probably complicated by the fact that the antenna is in a confined space.
