Anybody Here Own a Blu-Ray Player

Postby draiken78 on Fri May 09, 2008 2:28 pm

I was just wondering how many of you own a Blu-Ray player in here. I own a Playstation 3 myself, and I love it. I would love to have it go back to just being a video game console at some point though, because the thing is hidous and doesn't blend very well with anything in my entertainment center.

I'm curious to how you like your Blu-Ray players.

I have a sumsung BD-P1200. Needless to say, it is the most complained about Blu-Ray player that has been released yet. All the movies play on it eventiully. But usually you have to wait anywhere between a month and 3 months for a new release to work, due to slowness by Samsung releaseing firmware updates. I'll be waiting for quite some time before plopping down another $500 on a new player.

If you have a High-Definition TV set, and own a DVD player now, you will definitely see a difference in the quality of movies when shown in HighDef on a Blu-ray player. Blu Ray players are now down in the $350.00 range, and large video store like Blockbuster and Hollywood video are renting Blu Ray titles.

Having said that, you are really missing the boat if you don't include a Dolby-Digital surround-sound system with your Blu Ray and High-Def experience. You should also consider having your High Def TV set either professionally calibrated, or buy a copy of the AVIA calibration DVD, or "Digital Video Essentials" to get the most from your new set. I am constantly amazed how many badly, out-of-whack, High Def TV sets I see in my business!

Do you think the quality of Blu-Ray vs. DVD is enough to justify the $350 price difference? I'm going to be getting a new TV soon, and I figure if I'm going to get a Blu-Ray player I'll get it at the same time as the new TV.

Only you can answer whether or not the cost o a Blu-Ray is worth it to you. If you buy a high-quality HDTV, and you are looking for the best picture quality available for it, then the answer is yes: if you watch one or two movies a month on your DVD player, the answer is 'possibly not' The next generation of Blu-Ray platers is due out in the next couple of months, and most of the glitches that made Blu-Ray a little fickle should be gone at that time.
