Antenna Suggestion for zip 93117

Postby sbchargers on Sun Apr 18, 2010 11:33 pm

Hi, I live in the Goleta area and I want to get KCOP (ch 13) from LA, but I am confused as to choose the right antenna to get this station (here is my tvfool link):

I have looked at the Winegard YA 1713 but was wondering if a cheaper solution was available that would work just as well..?

I also have another place in Santa Barbara, CA that I want to install an antenna system for (tvfool link):
http://www.tvfool.com/?option=com_wrapp ... 53aff19ef8
The tvfool report shows relatively strong signals nearby, but I am also looking to get all major network stations from LA (including ch 5,9 & 13, as well as ABC, CBS, NBC, & FOX). This location is in downtown, surrounded by tall buildings.
Since the LA stations are far from my location, is there any chance that these stations will be reliable at this location?
What are your suggestions for antennas at both locations?
Thanks

The YA1713 is likely needed for KCOP in both locations. Antennacraft makes a cheaper version that is somewhat similar but you do get what you pay for in terms of quality.

KCOP and its sister channel on 11 are working on major upgrades of their transmission facilities. By early summer, both will be in the 115-120 kW power range making them among the most powerful high-VHF signals in the country. Both are currently at 30 kW.

Keep in mind that the YA1713 is only for high-VHF. You'd still need a UHF antenna added to it for complete coverage. Tigerbangs' deep fringe antenna prescription is probably about as good as it gets.

Thanks for the antenna suggestion for the VHF stations.

OK...so I found and looked at tigerbang's deep fringe prescription, and for UHF reception he suggested either the AntennasDirect XG-91 antenna or G-1483 16-bay antenna. While it looks that the G-1483 has more gain than the XG91, would the XG91 be sufficient for UHF for the SB location, given that all of the stations I want from LA are above the 0 dB noise margin, or should I go with the the 16-bay, if it ensures a more reliable signal at my location from weather conditions such as rain, etc?
I have tried another antenna, bought from Radio Shack, and I was disappointed at the performance of the antenna in getting the digital stations.
Thanks for the advice, it is greatly appreciated. :D

Having used a 91XG but not the 16-bay, I'd go with the 91XG.
