Antenna setup suggestions

Postby dodgert on Wed Apr 14, 2010 9:04 pm

I'm wanting to get rid of my satelitte for a while and just go with off air reception but want to get the best set up i can. I live just north of Charlotte NC in the 28677 area code here is the analysis from TV Fool http://www.tvfool.com/?option=com_wrapp ... 29029cce5b.
I'll connecting to 3 tv set one is a newer hd set the other 2 are older models that will need convertor boxes. I'd like to mount the antenna outside on my garage which is where the dish is now. The garage is about 30 ft from the house where i'll mount the pole,one of the tv sets is in the garage. Will i be able to use the cables run for the satelitte system as this would make things very easy for hook up? Also i may hook up 2 other sets in house at a later date. Thanks for help in advance.

Well, the good news is that the Charlotte stations all lie in the same direction from you, and all of them are on UHF. You do have other stations scattered all around you, but you can aim your antenna at Charlotte and get all your networks, so that's how I would proceed. Since the AntennasDirect has come down so much in price, and is such a good UHF antenna, I would use one, mounted on your roof and aimed at 195-200 degrees as measured by your compass. You can use the existing satellite wiring as long as you bypass the existing diplexers and satellite connections. In order to power all three TV sets, I would use a Winegard HDP-269 preamplifier mounted at the antenna, with the power supply located on one leg of the inside cable. Mount a DC power-passive splitter where your current satellite splitter is mounted, and use the cables currently run to the TV sets. The preamplifier will provide enough power to adequately power your three TV sets

preamp power supply_______ TV 1
antenna--->preamplifier--->splitter---< __________________________ TV 2

Thanks for the info i'llbe ordering up parts here soon and getting this set up. Is there any reason why i can't use the slitter that is already installed for the satelitte or is it not compatable?

The satellite splitter might work, but I don't know it's specs, and a new one is cheap enough as it is...
