Antenna Selection

Postby LisaM on Mon Dec 22, 2008 3:50 pm

We have 2 older TVs, both currently running off a very old antenna on the roof of a one story trailer, zip 21911. As a test we bought an Insignia NS-DXA1-APT converter and it comes back with "no signal", so the only other option I guess is to replace the antenna. Did some research on antennaweb and all the stations we need to reach are between 39-40 miles away, compass heading 240, blue/violet uhf (as of 2-17). We are out in the country with many trees 30 feet or taller. The comparison says we need an antenna with an amplifier but at this point I am out of my element. One of the models suggested is made by Wineguard, so I went to their site and used their tech support form to ask for a suggestion. They came back suggesting the HD8200U, top of the line and $200 when it's all said and done. Do you think this is overkill? Thanks in advance for your help!

I get the feeling that Winegard is probably right as far as their product line goes: you need a real deep-fringe antenna system, complete with a preamplifier and a rotator if you want all of your stations from Baltimore and Philadelphia. You can also investigate options from Channel Master, like their Crossfire 3671 along with their Titan 7777 preamplifier, but, based on your location, that appears to me a reasonable recommendation. You should shop around, however, as Winegard Direct is usually priced higher than other dealers like Solid Signal and Stark Electronics.
