Antenna selection - Mid Tennessee

Postby dstilts on Mon Dec 22, 2008 12:33 am

Hey guys,

First, let me thank you for your time and the help you offer so many. Thanks, really.

If you would, tell what I need.

I am located in Mt. Juliet (specifically 36.191079, -86.454434). I have a proposed antenna height of 25'. We have 4 analog sets soon to be on converters and come Christmas morning, will have one 52"HD, a Samsung LN52A650 that I just purchased for the wife and girls.

The antenna drop will run 90-110 feet to a distribution point. From there, the home run lengths will range from 20' to the HD, to 60' - 80' to the others. I will also do a Comcast or satellite something very soon but I wanted the antenna setup as well...

If it is a consideration, I am mostly interested in the Nashville sources within that 40° spread to the west of us. If somehow it is not important, then sure, I'll take broadcast from the rest of the world too.

So, can you tell me what's best for us based on what I have given you here? I want to do it right but I don't want to waste money either.

Again, thanks so much for taking the time to help everyone here at WTAC. (WTAC - We,the antennacally challanged).

Sincerly, D.

Thank you for the very good information you provided: it makes giving you advice very easy! You have a small issue in that WTVF-DT is going back to channel 5 after February 17, 2009, so we need to consider an all-channel antenna for your needs. The other issue to consider is that your stations lie in a fairly wide arc from your location, and, if you are powering 4 TV sets, we probably don't want to use a rotator if you can avoid it. I'd like to try to accomplish this using one antenna. After some consideration, here is how I would proceed: Use a Winegard HD-7082P all-channel antenna aimed at the bunch of stations at 260 degrees. I believe that if we aim at WSMV-DT directly at 261 degrees that we will see all of the Nashville stations with one aim of the antenna. The HD-7082P has enough bandwidth to accomplish this. Run the output of the antenna into a Winegard HDP-269 preamplifier, and put your splitter after the power supply of the preamplifier. I think that you'll find that everything should come in without a problem. I will include installation instructions and a link to the Winegard website so you can see the equipment. Good Luck!
