Antenna Recommendation (01095)

Postby Damaso87 on Tue Aug 25, 2009 1:45 pm

So, recently my dad has been on an anti-the-man binge. He would like to get an HD antenna to avoid paying for cable (as most of the stations air commercials for half the programming time anyways).

8 Deer Run Dr
Wilbraham MA 01095
(42.163478, -72.402628)

Is the location. We have one fairly tall tree (~50'), in front of the home. However, he does live on a mountain.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated! From what I see on antennaweb.com, there are a bunch of UHF stations he can receive, and there is also *one* VHF that would be nice to get as well.

He has a Panasonic HDTV (720p I believe), and a converter box he rents from the cable company (maybe it is a cable box, not sure). If needed, he can purchase a new converter box.

Don't drop your cable! My S.O. needs the revenue!! She runs the cable TV public access station in Wilbraham! (Channel 5)

Just kidding. I understand why you want to drop cable: Charter is particularly bad in Wilbraham. I sat through a couple of Selectman's meeting in Wilbraham with a Rep from Charter, and they are in a WORLD of HURT in Wilbraham. You know how bad it really is when all the people want to know if they can subscribe to Comcast, instead!

At any rate, Wilbraham is easy for local stations if you have a decent TV antenna. The Springfield locals are in two different directions, and the Hartford stations are also pretty easy with an outdoor antenna and a rotator. If your Dad is up on Minnechaug Mountian, he can do very well with a Winegard HD-7696P mounted on his roof along with a Channel Master 9521a rotator. If he has multiple TV sets in the house, we might want to look at a different option, because a rotator is'nt the best solution if you have a lot of TV sets in the house. WWLP is now on VHF channel 11, and the only other VHF station that you have is WTNH from New Haven, but you have UHF stations coming from two different directions: from Mt. Tom in Holyoke , and the Hartford stations which come from either Avon Mountain in Avon, Ct or from Rattlesnake Mtn in Farmington.
