Antenna recomendation for Spokane Valley

Postby zilh77 on Wed Jun 23, 2010 3:17 am

I have tried an omnidirectional antenna from Radio Shack, with decent but not satisfactory results. I was also unsure about how a disc shaped antenna would operate when we got a lot of snow. I visited your geoselector and looked up the recommended antennas. You recommended similar antennas I've seen listed in other posts. After reading through some of your answers to previous posts in Spokane, I noticed that you recommended using more than one antenna in order to ensure all towers are reached. We live a little east of Spokane, away from the downtown area. Could you please recommend a setup for Spokane Valley, Washington, zip 99206?
We will be running 2, maybe 3 tvs from the antenna. We live in a valley, with small hills. There are a fair amount of trees, houses, and office buildings (1 to 2 stories). We are northeast, and all the way down the hill from the south hill towers. And east of the downtown towers. We will be using a hdtv converter box. Thanks, this is a great resource and I appreciate the help deciphering all of this information.

Thanks for your info: now I remember what the issue with Spokane is: KXLY, your ABC station, is on VHF channel 13, and it lies in a different direction that the other Spokane transmitters do. In your situation, I recommend a directional antenna aimed at the cluster of transmitters that lie South-southeast of you, such as a Winegard HD-7694P, and also use a small VHF high-band yagi such as a Winegard YA-6713 aimed at KXLY, which is due east of you, Mount the two antennas on the same mast, separated by 4', with the smaller antenna on top of the larger one. Combine the signal from the 2 antennas using a Channel Master channel 13 JoinTenna, which is available from Warren Electronics, and run the coaxial cable from the JoinTenna to a 2 or 3 way splitter to divide the signal to your TV sets: you will see all of the majot Spokane stations perfectly if you do.

I mentioned before that we currently have a disc shaped omnidirectional antenna. I've seen omnidirectional antennas that are like a grid, straight up and down. Any idea how those perform or are we better off just going with 2 directional antennas?

The antennas that you are referring to are multi-directional, but not omni-directional: they are meant primarily for UHF reception, and are not an appropriate solution for your situation, as you have VHF stations in 2 different directions.
