Antenna necessary for 07720

Postby Inspctr on Sun Mar 28, 2010 6:12 pm

Hi,

Looking for help in selecting an antenna that will work in my area. Local Radio Shack said that every DTV converter sold in my area came back because it didn't work.
State: New Jersey
Zip: 07720
Borough of Bradley Beach

# of TV to be connected to DTV converters: 2 TV and I guess 2 converter boxes are necessary
One TV is a GE, the other a Samsung (on different floors of the residence)

No buildings taller than 3-4 stories within 4 blocks
No forest here - 4 blocks from the ocean

New Your City is about 40 miles away, due North

I have had brilliant success in the past with a Tivax converter box and roof mounted antenna in Hoboken (07030) just a mile or 2 from the transmission sources. Crystal clear 20+ channels. I would love to find an antenna of medium size, probably directional, that would pull in stations 40 miles away. Also, any suggestions on the best converter box for long distance reception? Thanks very much for any help here.

OOPS! One more thing...

It is my understanding that the New York City and New Jersey area Digital TV broadcasts are in BOTH UHF and VHF. Apparantly, that matters with antenna selection.
Hope someone can provide good guidance. I currently pay a cable bill for local channels only. Would love to eliminate that bill. Thanks to anyone who can help!

You need VHF-high-band plus UHF to receive the NYC stations. You should not have a problem if you mount a proper antenna on the roof. I would recommend a Winegard HD-7696P antenna aimed at 15 degrees by your compass. Run the coaxial cable into a central location inside your house, and use a Channel Master CM3412 amplifier-splitter at that point, then run the cables to your TV sets: you will see all the NYC-northern NJ stations without a hitch using that formula.
