Antenna mounting

Postby High Gear on Sat Jan 30, 2010 2:00 pm

What mount would be the best for the Winegard HD-4400? I originally thought to mount it to the chimney but that is out of the question since there is not enough of it extending past the roof line. I plan on using a 5' mast. Is a J-mount any better than a tripod?

Thanks!

J-mounts usually don't provide enpough stability for a 4-bay antena. if you chimney is WAY below your roofline, then you can use a tripod, but if it's just a foot or 2 below the roofline, then you can use a chimney mount as long as it peers above the roofline. It's not unusual to use 2-5' sections of mast with a chimney mount if you need aditional height. Chimney mounts are flexible in that they can be monted to accommodate longer or shorter masts according to how tall your chimney is. 5' above the chimney is not excessive for an HD-4400, as the antenna is light and has a low profile to the wind.

I have maybe 6" of chimney above the ridge. I would only be able to use one strap of the chimney mount and as we know I'll need two. So I guess tripod mount? My TV is on the opposite side of the house from the chimney. That would make for a much shorter run of coax. My real worry is makimg holes in the roof. Should that be a cause for concern? I'm ready to order this stuff on Monday!

Thanks

If you have an eave in the side of the roof, and eave mount is a good alternative to a tripod that won't put holes in your roof.
