Antenna Issue

Postby HuMan321 on Fri May 08, 2009 8:54 pm

Hi,
I live in zipcode 83713
I bought a Winegard 7694P antenna and installed it in my attic. I live in a two story house with a fairly steep pitched roof so the antenna is directed out through composition shingles and is about 24' off the ground. There is a single line of trees about 100 yards away in the direction of the towers, but all stations come through great except one (more on that later) The antenna lead is quad shield RG6 @15' to a 50 to 1Ghz 2 way splitter. (I had a higher rated splitter, but Silicon Dust doesn't recomment 2 GHz for TV signals) The 2 RG6 cables are 25' each and quad shield RG6. These coaxs go into an "HD Homerun" (Silicon Dust) for a SageTV system. I read the signal strength to all my local channels and it is very good 90-100.

My Fox station which is VHF 13 (I think) has a very high strength reading. Signal quality is also measured in the HD Homerun and Fox fluctuates all over the place which I can verify on the TV's as pixellation and dropouts. I am looking for help on why the signal quality on only this station is bad. All my station towers are in the same area and signal quality is strong on all others. TVFool puts the noise and strength of Fox in the middle of the pack.

I was thinking maybe FM was an issue and I should look for an FM Trap, but my channel 7 is closer to the FM band and it is perfect in signal strength and signal quality. I am bummed after putting this new antenna in my attic and receiving not much better than my old Terk TV50.

Any help would be appreciated. We happen to watch Fox shows more than all others...

Your issue is multipath: KCPQ-DT has it's transmitter west of Seattle, and the other Seattle stations have their towers near the center of town. If you aim at the bulk of the transmitters in Seattle, KCPQ-DT will be off-axis, and may have a strong signal, but you are receiving strong reflected signal from that station, causing the jitter and tiling that you are experiencing. Unfortunately, your attic mounting exacerbates the multipath issue for you. If you have room in your attic, I suggest finding a small channel 13 yagi, or a small high-band yagi like an AntenaCraft Y-5-7-13 and aim it directly at the KCPQ-DT transmitter. Join the cable from your Winegard HD-7694p using a Channel Master 0512-13 jointenna, and you should solve your problem.

I think I may have found out the issue to my setup and I am hoping it is not with my setup. This issue appears to be specific to my Boise, Idaho situation, but you never know who may find it helpful. Here is a link to the local board
