Antenna help in Windsor Ont Canada

Postby Horvs on Sun Nov 09, 2008 12:23 pm

I understand the basics around the conversion to digital from analog in Feb 09 and have just purchased an HD TV yesterday and am very happy with the picture and clarity of the stations I CAN get. I even have an amplifier attached indoors which has helped a bit, but now recognize I'll need an outdoor antenna for the best picture. Here's the catch...I live in Canada and the website antennaweb.org is specific for USA residents only. I watch American stations solely as I live in a border city, so this conversion is important to me too. I've looked up many different types of antennas, but don't know which is the best to purchase. Can you help? Here's some particulars that you may need:

- no cable/satellite

- HD TV - new as of Nov 8/08

- live across from Detroit Michigan

- some stations come in but often are broken up as 'low or no signal' or are temporarily scrambled as it is trying to find the right airwave

- if possible, would like compact antenna vs larger version, but if it makes a signifcant difference, will consider

- single family home - ok to attach to chimney or roof

- lots of high trees but limited high buildings surrounding the area

Any help??? What type would you recommend?

Thanks
Horvs

We can make good and specific suggestions if you can include your geographic coordinated for your location: the TV sites like antennaweb.org and TVFool.com will work if you input coordinates instead of a street address. Get back to us with that info, and the rest will be very easy!

thanks for your help. Please excuse my ignorance but I'm learning about this as I read and many of it seems like a foreign language. I did go to tvfool.com and tried to input my full address however it did not accept a canadian address, so i just input my postal code (which it took). I can't seem to find any coordinates to share with you so am hoping you could take a brief minute and enter what i entered to see what i see and perhaps that will give you the information you are looking for ??? my postal code is N9E 1Y9.

Also, we visited Radio Shack (the Source) today and are contemplating on purchasing the AntennaCraft HD View 360 - model HDMS9100 antenna. Do you know anything about that model? We liked the idea of the simplicity of the design and the compact feature vs the larger antenna styles.

thanks again for your help...

Based on what I can see of your situation, I would avoid "The Source" and look for a Delhi all-channel antenna like a VU-934SR or a VU-935SR with a rotator. You are in a place where analog broadcasting won't go away for a few years, so it will be important to you to have good analog as well as digital reception in your location, and there are signals from all directions in your area, so it will be vital to be able to roof-mount the antenna, and be able to rotate it to get the best reception. Wade-Delhi is a Canadian company out of Ontario, not very far from you, that makes terrific antennas: I use one at my house, and couldn't be happier with it: it's rugged and very powerful. If you aren't going to have satellite or cable, you owe it to yourself to get a proper antenna.
