Antenna Booster is heating up

Postby PTM on Sat Jun 19, 2010 1:29 pm

I use an outdoor antenna that is in my attic. I connected an antenna booster near the antenna which then goes to a 4-way splitter where each of the 4 signals is distributed to different rooms. There is now a good TV signal in all rooms.

The power supply is plugged into a wall outlet and connected to the antenna booster by 30 feet of cable. I noticed that the booster is getting very hot. I can touch it for about 3 or 4 seconds but that is all. Is it normal for antenna boosters to get that hot? It has one coax power input, one coax signal input, and one coax signal output.

Thanks.

There is the distinct possibility that you may have a drain wire in your coaxial cable that is shorting against the center conductor of the coax cable: that will cause a short circuit, and would cause the problem that you described. To rule out that possibility, get a continuity checker (the cheapest thing from Radio Shack will do) and check the resistance between the center conductor and the barrel of the coax connector at each cable: if you find any continuity between the center conductor of the cable and the barrel, you have a short.
