Do Antenna Amplifiers go bad?

Postby Tim on Fri Apr 09, 2010 12:40 pm

I have an HDA-200 amplifier that appears to have gone bad.

Does this happen often? Ever?

I'm getting some channels on the closest TV to the antenna, but the tv's that are located in a separate building are receiving very limited number (only the closest broadcast stations). I used to scan for about 31 channels, now they're getting 4.
There are 2 separate burial cables to the other building, I get the exact same results on both.

So, all signs point to the amp. It just strikes me as odd that it might fail. (Oh, yes, the power LED signals that power is present. A quick test of the transformer shows 16VDC.)

Just as a follow up...

I've completely eliminated the amplifier, plugging the main splitter directly into the pre-amp... I now have the majority of the stations we had before. So, I guess these amps do go bad.

Yes, unfortunately, amplifiers DO go bad, but, unless you are running very long cable lines or more than 4 TV sets from the same source, you should not need a preamp AND a distribution amp. Too much amplification is just as bad as too little.
