Antenna aiming

Postby antennaweb6740 on Wed Jan 21, 2009 6:42 pm

How does one aim a uhf/vhf antenna?
arrow to the source or away?
Do large pines near the element pose any problem?
We've been living with this for years, however DTV has changed the rules.

The narrower end of the antenna should face the transmitters. If you use Antennaweb.org or TVfool.com, those sites will give you compass points to determine the correct drection from your house.

As long as this topic's here...

How should an indoor antenna be aimed? I have a rabbit ears/loop combo. The window in my room faces south (hallway and another room to the north, 2 rooms east, end of house/other houses west). Most of the signals I I'm trying to get are northwest with some southeast. Should the rabbit ears and/or loop be tilted forward with their tops going towards the signal or is it better for them to be straight with the front just facing the signal?

Thanks!

Why don't you just give us your zip code or coordinates, and we can answer you with much more accuracy.

Oooh, sorry, I knew I forgot something. Zip is 11561.

This is pretty much what my antenna looks like:

Sorry, but that antenna is never going to give you reliable digital reception from LIC. Are you willing to consider an outdoor antenna?

LIC?

Given my rental situation, I don't believe that I can use an outdoor antenna. Looking around here, it seems like the Winegard SS-3000 is considered the best. Is the best option in my situation to try that and eat the restocking fee from the seller if I see no improvement?

Ask your landlord: most of them don't care, and the law provides for the right for a tenant to mount an antenna on the roof for local TV reception.

So it's more of matter of getting someone to install the antenna and possibly clearance for drilling?

It's too bad that we don't have a porch/deck like the upstairs tenants.

Pretty much...I suggest using a Winegard HD-7694P in your situation: aim it at the Empire Staret building: everything should come in perfectly when you do. The parts for everything should cost less than $100.00: you can pay that for a crappy amplifier antenna that won't do a thing for you! Remember tha after Feb 17, NYC will have 4 VHF stations, including WABC, WPIX, WNET and WNJB from New Jersey, so you need VHF as well as UHF...
