Antenna advise needed

Postby JRC on Sun Jan 17, 2010 11:23 pm

I live in Surrey BC Canada V3V5Y1 (south east of Vancouver) and no longer want to be hooked up to a cable company. I only have one TV but it is an older model - JVC model AV-27D201 - and it worked well with the cable. There are some tall trees on my property but it is by no mean a forest and there are no tall buildings near by as this is a residential area with houses.

Here is my TV Signal Analysis Results: http://www.tvfool.com/?option=com_wr...a65399b5ecf8f2

I would like to know which kind of antenna would be best suited to view a few local channels - basically the news - an indoor or an outdoor? I understand that I also have to purchase a digital converter box to be able to view digital broadcasting, do you have any suggestion for that purchase?

Thanks for your time and advise.
JRC

I read the various tips, and I would be inclined to get an outdoor antenna but have a limited budget.

DTV converters are in various states of supply at the moment, since the US Government subsidy of convertors has ended. I would suggest that you consult the referenc e on this site for guidance on the purchase of digital converters, but be aware that the supply of certain models mat be limited or non-existant.

You have a mixture of analog and digital stations coming to you from 2 different directions: from Victoria and from the mountains north of Vancouver. When shopping for a digital TV converter, be sure that you buy one that has an analog pass-through so you can use your tuner for analog reception, and your digital converter for digital reception.

One of the biggest issues when dealing with Canadian viewers is the availability of American-branded antennas in Canada. There are some good Canadian-Made antennas, such as the Wade-Delhi antennas, which are discontinued, but still available, however, many American brands such as Winegard or Channel Master are in short supply and quite expensive north of the border. Since you have an analog low-band channel in Victoria on channel 6, you'll need an all-channel outdoor antenna mounted on a rotator in order to see all of the Vancouver and northern Wastington TV stations available to you.

My suggestion would be to find a medium-range all-channe;l antenna like a Wade-Delhi HD2800 or a VU-935SR antenna mounted on your roof along with a rotator to turn the antenna. The Winegard HD-7082P or the Channel Master Crossfire 3679 are also good antennas that will work well if you can find them locally.
