Antenna advice - N. Virginia

Postby Xenon5414 on Tue Jul 28, 2009 8:15 pm

I need some help picking out an antenna for a second-floor HDTV. I live in zip-code 20120. I'm currently using a set of emergency rabbit ears (30-35 feet above the ground), specifically RadioShack 15-1868, and can pick up the DC majors (7-ABC, 9-CBS, 36-Fox, 48-NBC) with little difficulty and 60-70% signal strength (there's several large trees in the way). I would like to be able to receive Baltimore's CBS affiliate, on channel 13, for several reasons. I was able to receive two of the four Baltimore majors (11-NBC and 13) on analog with little snow using the same rabbit ears. (They come in from a different direction, avoiding the trees. My house is on top of a hill and so the signals aren't subject to blockage and reflection by other houses.) Upon the transition to DTV, I noticed that 11 was missing, but 13 wasn't quite gone. It causes my TV to stop for about a minute while scanning, but the TV hasn't been able to "lock it in" yet. Will amplified rabbit ears be enough? If so, what is the best positioning of the "ears" and which do you recommend?

This TVfool report (http://www.tinyurl.com/nqtj9b) reports about the same signal strength for 13 digital as it did for analog.

Sorry, but looking at the signal stregths available to you, I don't believe that any indoor antenna will do much more for you on the Baltimore channels than you have already. If you want Baltimore, you really need a fringe-area outdoor TV antenna.
