Antenna advice for SW FL (33947)

Postby bravesfan21 on Tue Aug 18, 2009 10:24 pm

I live in a largely flat area with no large buildings. I am about 35 miles away from all towers. I have tried out a few antennas and have been able to get most major networks (ABC, NBC, FOX), but have had trouble getting CBS (VHF) and cannot get PBS at all. I bought a UHF/VHF separator, so I will run rabbit ears to get CBS, but I need a powerful antenna to get PBS. Any recommendations for the two antennas? Any other advice? Thanks in advance!

I suspect that your issue is that you have a UHF-only antenna outdoors, and WINK is on Channel 9, which is VHF. If you change your antenna to a VHF-high-band plus UHF antenna like a Winegard HD-7694P or an AntennaCraft HBU-33, all of your Ft. Myers stations should come in just fine.

Thank you for your helpful response. I have tried a few UHF+VHF indoor antennas and found at least one that can pick up WINK. However, none of the antennas are picking up WGCU (31), which was one of our favorite channels. It is within 32 miles, so I should be able to pick it with an indoor antenna, right? Am I just not pointing it in the correct direction?

One more question: If I install a Winegard, should I ground it? If so, is grounding difficult? Is there any place where I can find instructions on how to do so? Thanks again!

You NEED an outdoor antenna: indoor antennas rarely cut it at a distance of 30 miles. Yes, every TV antenna should be grounded. See the installation guide linked below to learn how it's done.
