Antenna advice for 29356

Postby hommerstang on Sat Aug 15, 2009 5:12 pm

Hi everybody was a direct tv subscriber but it just got to expensive to watch. My zip is 29356 and I have a antenna on the house but it's the one direct tv provided about 10 yrs ago. I can get 7,16,29,33,49 and thats all. And I can get channel 4 early in the morning and by afternoon it's gone same goes for channel 21. The antenna is about 13 foot off the ground and their aren't alot of obstaciles in the way. And the channels I do get are clear as a bell. I have a LG 37" HDTV with the digital tuner built in cable is hooked from antenna to the tv with nothing else in between. Also only have the one tv, the antenna that I have looks like the Winneguard Sensar 3 hope this helps.

Any help would be greatly appreicated. Thanks hommerstang

Based on a TVFool.com scan of your area, you are getting about what I would expect you to get: most of the other stations are some distance away and very weak. Is there is specific TV station that you'd LIKE to see that you aren't currently getting?

Is there a way that I could get channels 4,13,and 21? I can get 4 in the morning and its really clear I just don't know why I can't get all day long. Would a bigger antenna bring in more channels or is this the best I can get where I am.
my coordinates are 35.153609N and -82.155285W. Thanks for the reply tigerbangs.

For the life of me, I can't find a channel 4, either analog or digital on your TVFool.com scan. Can you give me the call letter sof the station, and I can research it further?

AHA, I found it! WYFF calls theselves channel 4, but they really broadcast on UHF channel 36! And YES, it is weaker than the other Greenville stations, even though it's only 25 miles away. The issue, as I see it , is that you have stations scattered in a variety of other direcxtions, and the antenna that you have is not at all powerful, and it is directional. An Omni-directional antenna is not a solution for you, however, as the hills in your area will prevent any success using any kind of milti-directional antenna becausse of weak signals and multipath.

WYFF is too weak to pick up regularly with the antenna that you have, as are several other stations that lie in different directions, like WYCW, WHNS and WJZY. if you want them, you need a fringe-area antenna like a Winegard HD-7696P mounted on your roof along with an antenna rotator so the antenna can be aimed at the transmitters. I would seriously reconsider your antenna system at this point and look at a system like the one that I have suggested, because you are missing out on a lot of TV!

And here is your TVFool.com report: You should be able to see all of the TV stations whose nM is greater than 0 with the suggested antenna equipment.

Thanks a bunch tigerbangs!! As of the 18th of August WYFF channel 4 has built a taller tower with more power and we are receiving there signal now. But will be installing the antenna you have suggested and hope to have it up and going by next weekend. And again thank you for all your help!! One more question would the HD7698P antenna work better or would this be over kill? And also would I need a preamp to make the signal clear?

Thanks hommerstang

If you needed the gain of the HD-7698P, I would have probably suggested a 2-antenna solution using a separate VHF and UHF antenna, but I think that you will be well-served by the HD-7696P. It has plenty of gain, and is a much more manageable size.
