Advice for South Jersey (08225)

Postby rhutchis on Thu Sep 17, 2009 6:08 am

I am new to this forum and looking for antenna advice - specifically about purchasing either a combination antenna (Winegard 8200U) or a UHF only antenna (antennas direct 91XG) and another VHF antenna (any suggestions?). The stations that I want to receive are all 60 miles (one at 30 miles, WNJS,) away and are all the same direction. The problem is that one is broadcasting at 12 VHF (WHYY) and the other at 6 (WPVI). I don't want to have three antennas on the roof. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Here are the details - rooftop mount, about 30' high, clear path to 323 degrees, one TV (34 inch Westinghouse with integrated HDTV, about 2 years old) and an iMac with and eyeTV hybrid tuner. Current antenna is a radio shack with spotty reception that is only two years old and dropping aluminum rods already.

Because of WPVI-DT being on channel 6, you really need an all-channel antenna, and I would use the Winegard HD-8200u or the Channel Master Crossfire 3671 plus a good preamplfier like a Channel Master Titan 7777 or a Winegard AP8275. These antenna are more rugged than your Radio Shack antenna and have considerably more gain, as well, especially on UHF. Unfortunately, there are no more good VHF-only antennas available in the US market since both AntennaCraft and Wade-Delhi have discontinued their VHF-only antennas.

Thanks for the advice. I'm glad to hear both of those options are an improvement over the radio shack.
