Lately we have been dealing with an increasing number of attempts to manipulate product rankings. Note: each person is allowed to post one and only one review for each product. Exceptions can be made only under special circumstances when the reviewer feels that his earlier review must be corrected.
We have a sophisticated manipulation detection system in place and we will not tolerate any attempt to game the system and mislead consumers and our visitors. We reserve the right to delete any review that we feel is misleading or inappropriate and do that at our sole discretion. Thanks for understanding.
Also, from now on we require all reviews to be at least 100 words long. Short reviews, such as "a piece of junk" or "works as advertised" are not very helpful. Consider specifying more details. Elaborate on your location, the equipment you are using, reception quality of specific channels in your area. Check the word counter at the bottom when writing.

| Summary: Unit operated reliably on 2 occasions then crashed | ||
| I purchased 2 of the units early on in the program for use in our motor home which has analog sets that are too new to replace. I hooked them up and tried them immediately then put them away untill the mandated switch to digital. Last month we took a trip to a State Park outside a digital viewing area but within range of Canadian analog stations. They worked fine on analog passthrough but when I tried to switch back to digital the set would not switch. I talked to the retailer where I purchased them and learned that the problem was a common one with the early Philcos and to contact the manufacturer. I did and learned that since the unit is over a year old they will not stand behind it. One is still functioning but not for long I suspect. I will have to replace both but it will not be with a Funai product,nor will I ever consider a product manufactured or distributed through them. A VERY dissatisfied customer | ||

| Summary: A cable-cutter for the patient | ||
| We live in a marginal reception area in a mountainous region, so "rabbit ears" always gave us a fuzzy, ghosty signal with analog TV. We finally went to the minimum cable service just to get a better picture. But with this box and a new "digital" indoor antenna, we're getting a picture that's as good as cable on all the channels we regularly watch. The downside is that it takes some getting used to, even for a "techhie" like me. The main problem is that, with weaker signal, the converter will sometimes scan and not find a signal if you just use channel up and down. But if you enter the channel number on the remote, voila! It's there. So if you're patient and follow the manual carefully, you'll find it a good deal. | ||

| Summary: Not the best unit | ||
| I am sattisfied with functionality, picture and sound quality, of this box. Reception is standard, not better than average. I think there are better converter boxes out there for even the lower price. I have also tested the Zinwell ZAT-970A converter box and I think it is little better box. Remote control at least, looks and feels much better than the one, that comes with Philco unit.
Major problem with Philco unit, is missing control buttons on unit itself. If you lose the remote control or if it breaks this unit become useless. I don't know if there is replacement or compatible remote controls available on the market. I want to mention couple of good features on this box. One it is power supply built inside the unit itself, not in power plug box. This helps when you need to accommodate multiple equipment connected to electrical outlet (VCR, DVD player, sound system, satellite/cable box ...) Another one is on-screen program information. Information on this unit covers much more event/hours than information on the Zinwell box that I am tested together. This is good feature but it doesn't make this unit much more valuable for me because I don't watch TV too much and can't schedule viewing in advance. |

| Works well. Positioning for best signal important. Not getting all the local channels, which may just be my location. Gives very clear picture on available channels.

| Summary: Simple | ||
| Extremely easy to setup. If you're switching from analog to this, you'll be blown away by the improvement in picture quality and clarity. For the best results, definitely use the RCA interface.
My only gripe is that I can't control the volume through it, but I don't know if that's possible with any converter. |
