Wal-Mart and Dell Collaborate to Offer Repair Services
August 3, 2008 – 11:54 am,In its quest to bring consumers nearly every service and product they could ever possibly need, Wal-Mart has decided to pair up with Dell in order to offer electronics repair and installation services to customers. Apparently, Dell will be offering these services in Wal-Mart stores based in the Dallas area and will have a total of 15 of its “Service Stations” located throughout the various stores in the area.
According to Wal-Mart officials, these select stores will provide consumers with services such as HDTV and home theater installation, wireless support, and computer repair. Similar services are currently offered by some of Wal-Mart’s biggest electronics competitors, including the GeekSquad at Best Buy and the Firedog initiative offered through Circuit City.
“For Wal-Mart, the program provides an opportunity for us to understand more about what our customers need and expect in home installation and technology services, within a specific market,” the retail giant posted on its website. “These Solution Stations will provide our Dallas-area customers with added services, repair and consultation so that they can reach the best solution and value for their home entertainment technology needs.”
Currently, Wal-Mart does not have plans to offers the services in any of its other stores. Although Wal-Mart started selling Dell products last year, this is the first time the two companies are pairing in order to provide services. At the same time, the services provided by Dell will not be limited to only Dell products. In addition, the services will be provided both in the store and at customer’s homes, though performing tasks in store will be far cheaper. To install memory, for example, the store will charge $29 if the PC is brought to the store and will charge $99 to perform the task at a customer’s home.
