Making Your PC Central to Your Media Center

If you want your PC to be the most important component of your media center, you will need to pick up a CableCARD. Unfortunately, these cards are often full of bugs and can be difficult to find. Not only that, they often come with very little support and not too many computers come with CableCARD tuners installed in them. This means you can’t just simply snap one into place on your computer. At the same time, you are going to need to have a CableCARD if you hope to be able to unscramble channels such as Showtime and HBO.

Fortunately, you don’t necessarily need to have a CableCARD in order to obtain all of the HD television you want to watch. If the station is broadcast through ATSC signals, which means they are sent through a local television station, you won’t need to have a CableCARD to pick up the signal. Basically, if you can already pick up standard broadcast channels, you will be able to pick up these high def channels as well.

When it comes to QAM channels, on the other hand, you will have a little more difficulty obtaining your video signal. Most of these broadcasts are encrypted, which means you need to have a CableCARD or a cable box in order to decode the channel. Some of these channels will be unencrypted, however, which means you won’t need anything special to acquire the signal with your PC.

If you have the Vista system on your PC, you will likely need to have a CableCARD in order to support QAM. While some PCs are certified by the cable industry for QAM, not all of them are and Vista itself does not necessarily support the technology. Therefore, it is important to do a bit of research before purchasing a PC if you want to make it central to your entertainment system.
