Deciding What to Do with Broken Electronics
July 16, 2008 – 7:50 am,When it comes to electronics, many consumers are facing some pretty serious dilemmas. Namely, if your electronics device breaks down, is it better for you to get the item fixed or to simply replace it?
As with nearly every decision you have to make, the answer is “it depends.” Obviously, you will need to consider the cost factor involved with replacing the item versus getting it fixed. Many consumers are surprised to find that fixing a device costs nearly as much as it would cost to replace it. In this case, it generally is a better idea to replace the device rather than paying a huge amount of money to replace a used electronics device. Most experts say that if the repair will cost more than half of the devices value, you are usually better off replacing it.
But, what if the cost of fixing the device is not nearly the same as the cost of replacing it? In this case, there are other considers to consider – and this is where much of the “it depends” answer comes in. If you are someone that likes to stay up to date with the latest technology, you likely will want to go ahead and replace the device. After all, you were probably going to replace the device in the near future anyway, so you might as well save some money in the long run by making the switch to a new device now. If you weren’t planning an upgrade any time soon and if your device is still in otherwise good working condition, on the other hand, a repair might be your best call.
Be sure to consider the age of your device when making this decision. With the rapid advancements being made in technology, a device that is only a few years old may be quite outdated and you may be better off upgrading your equipment rather than repairing it. If you have a television that doesn’t have HDMI inputs, for example, you are better off tossing it and getting a new television that does have these inputs.
