Companies Report Rise in HD Television Sales
July 14, 2008 – 1:15 pm,Despite the sluggish economy, Best Buy and Circuit City are both reporting that a growing number of people are purchasing high-def televisions. In fact, during the first quarter of 2008, the companies show that their worldwide sells of LCD televisions have increased by 45% when compared to data gathered by NPD Group. Of course, not all LCDs are high-definition, but the vast majority are.
One of the main reasons so many people are deciding to switch to HDTV is because of the upcoming switchover to all digital broadcasting. While you don’t have to switch to an HDTV to receive the broadcasts, many people are discovering it is easier to just make the switch while also receiving the better picture quality that HD provides.
Although the government switchover to digital broadcasting may have inspired a few people to make the change to HDTV, researchers also found that a number of people simply like to keep up with the times and take advantage of the latest technology.
Since many broadcast stations are offering HDTV programming over the air for free, nearly everyone can receive at least some sort of HD broadcast without needing to sign up with a cable or satellite service. Of course, if you want to receive a greater number of HD channels, adding one of these services is a must. If you get cable with Comcast, for example, you will be able to access a total of 39 different high def channels. The company also offers over 400 on-demand programs in HD that subscribers can watch whenever they like.
Satellite also offers a number of HD channels. DirecTV, for example, offers a whopping 97 channels in HD. It does not, however, offer the on-demand programming that Comcast offers. Dish Network offers 72 high-def channels, with the basic package including 45 channels in HD.
