Video Game Consoles Help Drive HDTV Sales
May 6, 2008 – 8:39 am,Pretty much everyone agrees that the Sony PlayStation 3 played a large role in helping the Blu-ray disc win out in the DVD format wars, but many may not realize that both the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360 have also played a significant part in driving sales of HDTVs as well.
According to a recent study, which was conducted by Magid & Associates, approximately 18% of HDTV sales between September 2007 and January 2008 were largely made by consumers looking to improve their gaming experience. In addition, it was during this time that three million people added a second HDTV to their homes.
Obviously, the falling prices of HDTVs also played a role in the purchases. Similarly, many people purchased an HDTV during this time as a holiday gift or so they could enjoy the Superbowl to its fullest. Nonetheless, 18% of those televisions were clearly purchased by gamers looking to improve their gaming experience and to take full advantage of the capabilities of their gaming systems. In all, the study found that 25% of American homes now have at least one HDTV.
The rise of HDTVs and the victory for the Blu-ray disc format is good news for Sony and its Bravia HDTV series. After all, the television is perfectly set up for viewing HDTV format and Blu-ray discs. It looks as if the company did something right with its marketing and strategies.
Despite the increase in the number of HDTVs in American homes, still only 70% of HDTV owners actually have access to HD content. The other 30% claim tat the cost and the limited number of HD channels have both prevented them from signing up with an HD account.
