Mitsubishi to Launch Laser Televisions Soon

Mitsubishi displayed its new laser technology at the recent Consumer Electronics Show in January, but has only recently announced that its LaserVue displays are going to available to stores this fall.

There isn’t a whole lot known about how much these new sets will cost at this point. Mitsubishi promises that this information, as well as other details regarding the televisions, will be available in June. With these televisions being the first laser powered televisions to hit the market, however, chances are that the televisions will be quite costly.

The new LaserVue televisions reportedly have a number of benefits when compared to other HDTVs on the market. For example, when these televisions are compared to LCDs and plasmas of the same size, Mitsubishi claims that LaserVue is able to provide improved contrast levels, color saturation, and black levels. This is because laser lights are able to provide pure illumination and produce twice the color range of plasma and HDTVs. Furthermore, unlike DLP HDTVs, these televisions do not require a lamp or a color wheel.

Another perk to these televisions is that they do not use as much energy as LCDs and plasma televisions. In fact, Mitsubishi claims tat its LaserVue television uses only half the power of LCDs and one third the power of plasmas.

Mitsubishi also has high hope for the laser technology when it comes to 3D imaging. Receiving this extra feature, however, requires using stereoscopic glasses and special encoded media.
