Linking Devices with Consumer Electronics Control

I have mentioned before that there are a number of different terms that get thrown around by television manufacturers when shopping for televisions. One of these terms involves connectivity between devices.

With the improved technology available, many manufacturers are making it easier for televisions and other devices to communicate with each other. This technology is called Consumer Electronics Control, or CEC for short. This technology makes it possible for the remote from an HDTV to manage up to ten different devices if they are connected through your HDMI connection. This means you don’t need to have so many of those pesky remotes lying around and you don’t have to worry about going out and buying a universal remote control.

When it comes to this special type of connectivity, however, all manufacturers don’t call it by the same name. In addition, they don’t all provide the same service to consumers because allowing devices to talk to each other in this kind of way is not mandatory.

LG Electronics allows for this interoperability, regardless of the brand of the device. In this case, the technology is referred to as SimpleLink. Toshiba also allows for crossover operability, but they refer to this programming as CE-Link. Sony, on the other hand, only allows for communication amongst Sony devices.

The bottom line is that you should discuss all of these options with a sales associate before you make a purchase. It is always a good idea to do plenty of research before you make a purchase in order to ensure you are taking full advantage of all of the available options the industry has to offer and that you get a television that provides you with the options you need.
