Setting Realistic Expectations for Your HDTV

If you already have an HDTV, you are well aware of what I am getting ready to write about. If you are someone that is in the market for an HDTV, however, you had better listen up.

HDTVs are a beautiful thing and the picture that these televisions can achieve is simply amazing. I personally have a 52 inch 1080p Sony Bravia LCD and I am in love with the picture. When I got my first HDTV a couple of years ago, however, I was disappointed in the much of what I saw. This was because I was ignorant to how HDTV works and the effects an HDTV has on an image that is broadcast in an analog signal.

When you visit the showrooms, the images being shown on the televisions are in HD. Therefore, the picture is certainly going to look outstanding. You need to be aware, however, that everything you watch on your brand new HDTV won’t look as good. In fact, when it comes to analog broadcasts, you might actually find that the image looks grainier on your HDTV than it did on your old tube TV. This is particularly true if you upgrade to a larger screen.

This happened to me when I brought home my first HDTV. Since I was completely ignorant to how HDTV worked and about the different types of signals, I was very disappointed when I hooked up my new set and saw that the picture looked worse than what I was accustomed to with my CRT television. Then, when I threw in a movie, I was once again on the HDTV bandwagon.

Since the time when I purchased my first HDTV, an increasing number of channels are being broadcast in HDTV. In addition, my current HDTV is excellent and I don’t have the same types of problems that I had before. It is also helpful that my satellite company now provides me with local channels, which helps make those channels look much better on my television.

The point is, you need to consider your viewing habits and have realistic expectations when you purchase an HDTV. For now, and probably for the next few years, you may still be watching some channels that are not broadcast in HD and do not provide the quality you had hoped for.
