LCD Televisions Further Dominate the HDTV Market
March 9, 2008 – 10:05 am,According to industry experts, LCD televisions are continuing to be more dominate than plasma televisions in terms of the number of units sold. In all, the number of flat panel HDTV televisions being purchased in the United States grew by 27% from November to December. In addition, a growing number of these televisions were LCD.
“One important development in December was that plasma models continued to lose ground to LCD,” said Rosemary Abowd, who is the Vice President of global market information experts Pacific Media. “LCD already dominates the market below 45 inch, but in December, LCD took 50% of the larger 50 inch to 54 inch segment. Plasma’s unit share dropped to 17% in December, which is the lowest point in the history of our sample. We have not seen the impact of the new, larger capacity LCD plants that will start to come online later in 2008, which should only increase LCD’s competitive position in the larger sizes.”
One possible reason for the large number of sets purchased during these months is the fact the costs of the televisions dropped by as much as 10%. As such, consumers may have simply been taking advantage of the lower prices. At the same time, it is likely that a growing number of consumers are appreciating all that these televisions have to offer!
