HDTV Owners Enjoy More Television
March 4, 2008 – 9:03 am,It seems as if those people with High-Definition televisions are more likely to watch television – particularly when it comes to big broadcasts such as the Super Bowl. In fact, according to recent Nielsen ratings, those Americans with HDTVs were 10% more likely to watch the Super Bowl than those without HDTV.
Of course, it is hard to determine which came first: the TV or the sports fan. In other words, are people with HDTV more likely to watch certain shows because they have such great televisions? Or, are people interested in big name television shows more likely to purchase an HDTV?
Overall, the Super Bowl earned a 43.3 rating through Nielsen. When looking specifically at those with HDTV, on the other hand, the rating came in at 47.6. According to Nielsen, however, these numbers are not unique to the Super Bowl. Of course, the fact that they are so high is something that is unique to the big game, but the fact that there is a discrepancy between HDTV viewers and those without HDTV is not. Overall, Nielsen states that those people with HDTVs tend to watch more television than those without.
Aside from sports, HDTV owners are also more likely to watch sitcoms and primetime dramas. For example, Grey’s Anatomy had 43% higher ratings in HDTV homes when compared to other homes in November 2007. Desperate Housewives also enjoyed a 33% higher viewing from those with HDTV.
