Choosing Between LCD and Plasma
February 4, 2008 – 9:41 am,If you have decided that you want to go with a flat panel television rather than a rear projection model, you will have to choose between an LCD or a plasma television. Both types of televisions are highly regarded in the industry, so you really can’t go wrong either way. Nonetheless, since you will be spending a good amount of money in order to purchase one of these televisions, it is important for you to know what each has to offer in order to purchase the one that best suits your needs.
Neither plasma nor LCD televisions require a lamp, which is one benefit to flat panel televisions compared to many rear projection televisions. Instead of lamps, plasma televisions utilize inert gas that has been trapped between to panels made of glass. With the help of a special electric field that converts the gas to plasma, the plasma is able to stimulate the phosphors in order to create an image. Phosphors are able to produce a very sharp image with great contrast.
Unfortunately, burn in can occur with plasma televisions if a static image remains on the screen for a long period of time. Therefore, if you like to play video games, a plasma television may not be right for you because scores and other information typically remains on the screen during the entire time a game is being played. At the same time, new technology is being used that makes it quite difficult to have burn-in occur with a plasma television. So, if this is an issue for you, watch for a television that has been specifically made to prevent this from occurring.
LCD flat panel televisions are generally more expensive than plasma televisions of comparable size, but they offer very detailed and bright images. In addition, you don’t have to worry about burn in with an LCD television and LCDs are generally thought to be the most cost-effective technology for the long run.
So, when it comes down to it, your decision should mostly be made based upon how great the TV looks, the options it includes, and the price you will have to pay to bring it home!
