As with any product, manufactures of HDTVs are looking for ways to set their televisions apart from the competition. After all, when all else is the same, the only real factor separating one television from the next is the price. Of course, some televisions have a better reputation than others, but the technological differences between sets made from one company to the next are becoming slimmer and slimmer.Speaking of slimmer - HDTVs are getting slimmer too! At least that is what many manufacturers are trying to accomplish. In order to set themselves apart from the competition, major companies such as Pioneer are trying their best to reduce the thickness of their televisions. In fact, at the International Consumer Electronics Show, the company displayed a new plasma television that was just three-eights of an inch thick. According to the company, this 50 inch television is the thinnest one out there. But, you are going to have to wait to get your hands on one of these sets because Pioneer has no plans to get them out this year. They are hoping, however, to launch these sets in 2009.

Hitachi also showed off a much thinner LCD, though it is actually twice as thick as the one shown by Pioneer. Nonetheless, it is still only three-fourths of an inch thick. This television won’t be coming out any time soon, but Hitachi does have plans to launch a 1.5 inch thick television during the second quarter of this year.

If you are interested in one of these super-thin televisions, some will be available fairly soon. In fact, Sony plans to offer one that is only one-eighth of an inch thick. Unfortunately, In order to make their televisions thinner, companies are utilizing a new form of screen technology called organic light-emitting diodes, or OLEDs. Right now, they screen size made with this technology is quite small. In fact, the largest screen size Sony will offer is one that is 11 inches diagonally. They also aren’t cheap, with the projected price tag being $2,500.
